Ceiling Fan Installation & Repair for Our Neighbors in Star, Eagle & Meridian

Choosing the Right Size Ceiling Fan Installation for Optimal Airflow

The size of the ceiling fan should be determined by the square footage of the room. This will maximize efficiency and airflow. With these general guidelines, you will be able to select an appropriate size ceiling fan for the room:

  • Small rooms, up to 100 sq ft, choose an 18”-44” ceiling fan
  • Medium size room, such as a 15’ x 15’ master bedroom, up to 225 sq ft, choose a 42”-54” ceiling fan
  • Larger rooms, such as large master bedrooms, living rooms, or large patio spaces, up to 400 sq ft, choose a 52”-60”ceiling fan
  • For extra large spaces, larger than 400 sq ft, you might consider an oversized fan 60”-96”+ or possibly two ceiling fans

Ceiling Fan Installation Considerations

  • Consider how close nearby lighting is to avoid flicker.
  • The height of your ceiling will determine the appropriate length for your ceiling fan downrod. For more details see our blog post, Ceiling Fan Downrod Length: Choosing the Right Fit
  • Some Electrical Requirements to Consider:
    • Ceiling Fan Rated Junction Box
      • Ceiling fans cannot be mounted to a ceiling box that is not designed and rated for a ceiling fan.
      • Ceiling mount light boxes are often not rated for fan mounting. If you are replacing a ceiling light in the center of a bedroom, the box needs to be checked to make sure it is ceiling fan rated. If it is discovered that the existing junction box is not ceiling fan rated, it will need to be replaced. This is a good reason to hire a licensed electrician for your ceiling fan installation.
    • Outdoor fans must be listed for either damp or wet locations.
      • Damp locations would include spaces such as a covered porch or patio
      • Wet locations might include a pergola or gazebo.

I hung a ceiling fan in my bonus room. I realized the electrical box would not support the weight. Called State Street Electric. They came out the next day and installed the correct box and installed my fan. Mike was super nice and up front on costs. He even brought treats for my dog. Highly recommend!

Additional Considerations for Choosing Your Ceiling Fan

Ceiling Fan Control or Ceiling Fan Controller

Ceiling fans can be controlled with pull chains, wall controls, remotes and sometimes even an app on your phone.

Ceiling Fans With or without a lights

In some smaller to medium sized bedrooms, a fan with a light kit is a very practical choice and would have a lower installation cost compared to adding separate lighting. And, if recessed lights are positioned too close to fan blades, it can cause light to flicker. In larger rooms a ceiling fan without a light and properly spaced recessed ceiling lights to light the room can look amazing.
